I love working at the Southern Equine Expo. I am so honored that they keep asking me back to work in the Tribute Feeds Lecture Hall.
2024 Speakers
Every year, the event includes a lineup of clinicians and speakers who are leaders in their discipline or specialty, and this year was no exception. Two of our speakers, Michael and Julia Lyons of Michael Lyons Horsemanship are a part of arguably one of the most influential families in the world of Western horsemanship.
Two new faces at the expo were Michael Canfield and Theresa Mottola of Lucky Star Horsemanship, who while fine horseman, offer business consulting for horse businesses, combining their love of horses with their substantial business experience.
The line up of speakers included but was not limited to veterinarian Dr. Christine Cocquyt of Tennessee Equine Hospital, farrier Bill Lampley, trail experts Josh and Dr. Gillian Guin of Crossroads Ranch, and liberty expert Patrick Sullivan of Gamilah Unbridled.
2024 Lectures
While many of this year’s lectures were topics previously covered at the Expo, Theresa Mottola and husband/business partner Michael Canfield offered some great new topics on marketing your horse business. Both have extensive business experience and offered great insight into how we as horse professional can focus and brand our businesses.

In particular in her lecture on women in the horse business, Theresa offered some interesting facts and insights on why women make up the majority of the insight but are not seen as the top professionals in their fields.
Of course, even our “usual” topics of training, horse care, and overcoming fear in the saddle had fresh new perspectives from this years lecturers. Our usual trail topics given by the Guins offered the perspective of local Tennessee trail riders. The overcoming fear lectures given by Julia Lyons offered a new perspective on how fear affects ours bodies.
I could go on and on about the wealth of information shared in just three days by our wonderful lecturers, but I’ll spare you a complete recap!
My Southern Equine Expo 2024 Experience
Every year, the Southern Equine Expo has offered lectures and clinics from leaders in the horse industry, as well as fun competitions that exemplify and honor principles of great horsemanship. This year was no exception.
This year, however, had the feel of a small town. Clinicians, speakers, and judges weren’t just focused on sharing information. They were genuinely interested in the success of the event, the participants, and each other. It was an exceptional event in every respect.
